Who We Are

Strengthening the American screen economy

FilmUSA is the national trade association representing state, regional, city, and tribal film commissions across the United States. We exist to strengthen the American screen economy by coordinating national strategy, advancing federal policy, producing credible economic research, and elevating U.S. storytelling in global markets.

The Front Lines

What is a Film Commissioner?

A film commissioner is an economic development professional whose industry happens to be the screen. Offices vary in a number of services they can offer, from incentive administration and permitting to location libraries, crew databases, and vendor recruitment, but the function is constant: attract production of every scale, from commercials and independent features to documentaries and studio series, and convert it into local jobs, local spending, and local capacity that outlasts the shoot.

The role sits in a narrow and unusual silo, requiring fluency in the film industry, in government, and in economic development at the same time. Commissioners are the engines of this economy at the state and local levels, and they are the ones building it on a long horizon rather than chasing it one production at a time.

FilmUSA is where more than 120 of those offices come together. That makes us the only organization holding the nationwide, ground-level record of where American production goes, why it goes there, and what it leaves behind.
